My Project

I am requesting high-quality art supplies to inspire my language learners to do their best work when completing class projects. In my ESL classroom, I employ a problem-based learning approach with linguistic and artistic integration. My goal is to teach unforgettable, language-rich, multi-disciplinary units. For example, this year I designed a migration unit that included a focus on the Yellow Warbler. To incorporate science standards, we investigated habitats, adaptations, and survival needs. Reading and writing components were included, as well as graphing and measurement for math. Our final projects were life-sized wingspan models of different birds from around the world with teaching points. I have found that multi-disciplinary units allow for deeper learning because we spend time looking at a real-life problem from different perspectives, which is not only interesting for students, but also supports critical thinking. We also make time to brainstorm real-life solutions, when applicable (for example: writing letters to county commissioners to protect farmland and the animals that inhabit it from a data center).

To express what they learn in multi-disciplinary units, I plan projects that weave language and content learning with art exploration.

This requires art supplies, along with many upcycled materials. It is worth the investment because students do their best work when they VALUE the outcome. Student motivation makes a big difference in the quality of work. Students use their language to request and offer feedback throughout the learning process and always share their learning through an exhibition/student-teaching of some sort, which also contributes to high quality output.
