The students at our school represent a wide array of cultures and backgrounds. Situated in a major city and classified as a Title 1 school meaning over 65% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. This adversity also makes them the strongest people I know. Situated in a growing Technology Mecca there is a need for more Technology based instruction and skills. In fact the technology field is set to increase in our area by 27% within the next 5 years and my students want those jobs.
I am entirely convinced that our STEM students will change the world.
How you might ask, and tell you I shall. I have seen more brilliant ideas come from my students here than I have ever seen in my 8 years teaching. Designs I wished already existed and I could already use. Their ingenuity makes me try harder as a teacher and to keep doing everything in my power to help them see their ideas come alive.
My Project
One of the units in STEM is about programming, usually in scratch. Students enjoy learning how to program but the only things they can produce is digital media such as games. They struggle to see the real world application of programming.
With a set of programmable PARROT drones, my STEM students will see the real world applications of programming by programming search and rescue style commands into drones.
Much like robotics competitions, students will be able to compete in groups with increasing difficulty. Being able to experience the results of programming will help them be ready for the cutting edge technical field.
