Professional Camera to Revitalize Journalism Program
Help me give my students a professional camera so that we can bring our school newspaper into the 21st century. Students have been using their cell phones to take photos with limited success.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hawthorne Math & Science Academy is a tiny, yet rigorous school, where students come from different walks of life, a school that's unique and effective in its approach to college preparation and professional development.
As an English teacher at at Math & Science school, I can proudly say that we're cultivating amazingly talented and skilled writers as well.
The English Department holds students to just as high of a standard as each of the other departments, and we teach students how to write and think like authors. For our Newspaper club specifically, I'm the new advisor, and I'm working alongside two fresh Editors-In-Chief, with about 50 new-to-journalism writers to create a more student-oriented and focused paper.
Although our class is non-graded, it offers students an opportunity to try their hands at something beyond the typical curriculum. Because of the school's size, students only have one opportunity to take a creative elective, Art during their junior year. My class, which serves as an alternative to a typical college-prep skills support period, allows students to try writing for a real audience on topics of their choice--and, hopefully, contribute positively to the school culture.
My Project
Currently my students have been taking photos with their cell phones. This has recently become more of a problem with a new school policy banning cell phones during the school day, which means students can't document school events and shoot photos during the school day--exactly what they need to do for a journalism class.
My student photographers will get a chance to practice "real photography" with this professional camera and create eye-catching photos for our currently lackluster online school newspaper.
We hope to transform the layout to focus on drawing in readers with provocative photos and a colorful layout, taking advantage of the new online platform and playing to our student-readers' demands and interests.
