My Project

Panthers are voracious and future voracious readers. Some students race to the library whenever new manga arrives. Some of them wait in 10-person hold lines for romantic graphic novels like "Heartstopper," while some are reluctant to pick up a book until the right one gets recommended by a friend. Some like to re-read their childhood favorites, while others only want to read graphic novels. There are also some that will only choose books if they hear an extended description of their plots first. Their reading journeys are varied and vibrant.

I lure students into the library on Fridays for Project Lit, where they do fun and creative activities, related to a book of the month, and are rewarded with prizes or chips.

Our games are falling apart and it's hard to keep the prizes stocked; we had 78 6th graders attend one 15-minute session the other day!

We are also about to start a Magic Ticket contest, where 20 tickets will be hidden inside non-fiction and older books that haven't been checked out in a while. When students check out a book with a ticket in it, they will need to read the book, and then bring it and the ticket to me. If they can summarize the book in a way that convinces me that they read it, they will win their choice of a fancier prize than the ones that are normally given out on Fridays.
