Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle school students are full of life. They are interested in the world around them, socially, environmentally, and technologically. A majority of my students have Hispanic heritage, and many are first-generation American citizens. About 60% of the student population is receiving free or reduced-price lunch, which indicates the poverty level. They have challenges that are different from any I faced growing up, and every day they amaze me with their fortitude!
My students need a variety of inspiration to stay motivated to succeed in math.
They are in a special time in their lives when they are starting to make choices that will affect their whole lives. As their math teacher, I strive to teach and reach every one of my changing students, reminding them that whatever else is going on in their lives, they have the brains and strength to succeed.
My Project
I would guess that middle school age is the age when students are distracted the most by each other. Their brains and bodies are going through changes making it difficult for some to concentrate on school lessons.
These privacy partitions will help students who need it to focus on their own work and keep them from focusing on other students and distractions.
Very often students ask if they can spread out their desks or move to another seat during independent work and tests so these privacy partitions would be used a lot. I have made my own privacy partitions before out of folders, but they were written on by students and didn’t stand up well. Sometimes students try to use their binders, but papers fall out.
I think having durable, reliable, privacy shields will really help students to focus on the task in front of them, whether that be a worksheet or test or lesson.
