My students need supplies such as yarn, paper, crayons and more to spark creativity, encourage artistic expression, and build fine motor strength in our classroom art studio.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
When grown-ups empower children by allowing them to be experts--scientists, mathematicians, musicians, artists--children take ownership of those roles.
At our school, we serve a high-need population with many students coming from challenging situations.
We believe in creating opportunities for all our students to become experts, engage in deep thinking, explore ideas, communicate their learning in multiple ways, and express their creativity. We work hard to create a safe, supportive, and fun learning (and playing!) environment for our 16 preschool students.
My Project
These art supplies will be used every day in our classroom. Students will draw inspiration from famous artists (like those included in the book Discovering African American Art for Children), their works, and the world around them to create their own works of art in our classroom studio.
Students will explore ways of using a diverse mix of materials to create many different kinds of art projects.
Students will draw with materials such as metallic crayons, Playcolor, and sketching pencils, sculpt with clay and studio tools, and collage with buttons, tissue paper, pom poms, and feathers. They will sew with child-friendly needles, weave fabrics made from yarn with a loom, and create detailed self-portraits by closely looking at their own face. While using materials such as craft tape, glitter glue, and pony beads students will not only develop their creativity but also their fine motor skills.
All projects created with these materials will be student-led. Teachers will encourage students to create multiple drafts, develop language and vocabulary around new materials and the projects they create with them, and share new project ideas or techniques with their classmates.
