Preparing Students for Careers in Photojournalism

My students need to be able to edit and manipulate photographs and create text using current software (Photoshop).

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you recall the first time you snapped a photo and the anticipation of waiting? Making an interesting photo requires more than pointing and shooting a camera. I want my students to become more visually literate by teaching them how to communicate intended meanings through photojournalism.

I teach visual arts at a magnet school in a large urban district that offers a dual language program in English and Spanish.

Students spend half of their instructional day learning Language Arts and Science in English. The other half of the instructional day is devoted to Math and Social Studies which are taught in Spanish. With this curriculum, students become bilingual and bi-literate in the two target languages. Nearly 60% of the student population is Hispanic. 57% of the student population receive free or reduced price meals. This often limits families' abilities to participate and provide educationally enriching experiences on their own. Students in the dual language program perform at or above grade level. Our school has achieved exemplary academic status for three consecutive years. The blending of Latino/Hispanic cultures creates a multi-cultural school community where students learn academics through one another's language.

My Project

Next year our school is adding middle school, grades 6 - 8, one grade level per year. I have volunteered to teach an elective course on Photojournalism. Under my supervision and guidance, students will be responsible for creating the entire contents of a yearbook which will be available for sale to all students at a minimal cost. Nearly all middle school students currently enrolled have chosen this elective. Students will be writing articles in both English and Spanish - so the yearbook theme will tie in with our magnet school theme - celebrating diversity through two languages. Our PTA is supporting the yearbook project by providing financial support with printing. Our school is equipped with a computer lab and several digital cameras for student use. Due to budget restrictions, instructional supplies are limited to basic needs. However, we lack Photoshop Software to edit photos and text. Photoshop will help me facilitate student learning using 21st century skills.

It could be debated that photography is the most democratic visual art of our time: taking photographs is part of our family lives that does not require a specific talent like hand-eye coordination which is crucial for drawing.

Photography is a universal language. It is used not only to record the history of mankind, but also our everyday lives around the world. Our world evolves around the pictures we view everyday on the Internet, TV, magazines, and in newspapers.
