This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My U.S. History and Restorative Practices students come from diverse backgrounds and have diverse strengths and interests. One thing they all have in common, however, is their desire to work hard all year to cultivate their strengths, seek opportunities for improvement and grow as learners and as people.
We create a community in our classroom where all opinions are valued, and respect and hard work are expected.
Students spend their class time analyzing primary-source documents, writing creative essays, and creating content-based performance pieces. Data-tracking and goal-setting drive our instructional activities and help to determine each students' next steps as they move through our standards-based coursework. To that end, personalized, weekly chats with students about their progress in our coursework helps ensures students stay organized, goal-oriented, and on pace to pass the course with proficiency.
To ensure that my low-income, urban students continue to see the value of setting goals and using class time wisely, I am eager to incorporate an awards-based incentive system to help students see the value in setting goals, monitoring progress, and growing as students and young people.
My Project
Teenagers may act "too cool for school," but I can assure you they appreciate positive reinforcements and clear, visible supports to increase their class-time productivity and chances for success. I will create a ticket based incentive system to reward students for adhering to our classroom and academic expectations. The whiteboard, featured prominently at the front of class, will feature our behavioral and academic goals for the day. Students will earn one ticket for effort towards each goal, and we will hold weekly drawings for snacks and small prizes. Headphones, incentive games, and stickers will ensure all students participate and succeed!
