By reading this award-winning nonfiction text, my urban high school students will be able to relate to the story of poverty in our city from an outsider's lens. Many of these students are struggling with the effects of poverty themselves, but are often uncomfortable sharing their issues with peers. Reading this book and analyzing the text will be the first step in implementing a service learning project, where students will enter their communities with a focus on change. The stories in "Evicted" are the stories of my students' families. I hope that after a unit of instruction with "Evicted" as the focus, students will be able to analyze their own communities for ways they can help inspire positive improvement and change right now.
