Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an inquisitive, sociable, and energetic bunch who enjoy thoughtful discussions and asking hard questions. They are especially responsive to creative activities that require a lot of hands-on work in small group settings, and benefit from cooperative learning.
Over 90% of my students come from low income households of Latinx, Black, and Asian decent and are especially responsive to activities that focus on inclusive representation.
Despite their financial struggles, many students hope to support their families, and want to make their parents proud by graduating high school and pursing a successful profession.
My Project
The cumbersome size of traditional classroom desk/chair combos often hinders learning by robbing students of usable space and mobility within a classroom. Students are crammed, uncomfortable, and often 'landlocked' in these types of desks, finding it difficult to get in and out of their chairs.
Transitions from individual to group work are even more challenging in a small classroom setting with a high student count.
The desk/chair combos make it difficult to move desks and split students into groups. As such, the classroom layout and seating is arranged to accommodate desks rather than student needs.
The flexible seating of the Surf Portable Lap Desk will allow for greater movement and facilitate collaboration by proving students with a more comfortable and dynamic work space. Student group work and interactions will be easier as space is freed up in the classroom. It will also give students alternative seating to best suit their learning needs.
There are already so many barriers to learning, and student seating and mobility should not be one of them.
