These book sets will be used to teach English Language Arts standards while also engaging students with characters and settings that mirror themselves and their own experiences. Students are best engaged with readings that are relatable and acknowledge their social struggles and concerns. The chosen novels will provide students with voices and perspectives that engage them in familiar worlds with more challenging texts. While many of my students are eager to learn and engage in discourse, so many feel overlooked by texts that exclude minority voices. In providing them with these inclusive texts, we can better facilitate learning through increased engagement. This will promote more productive classroom discussions and introspective thoughts. However, my greatest hope is to help endorse higher level reading and inspire analytical thinking in order to help them achieve academic success.
