Poetry for Perusing, Probing and Pondering - Part I

My students need 35 books to create a poetry library.

My Students

Where has poetry gone? It seems to be taking a backseat to so many other (very important) texts and topics. The art of reading poetry and understanding figurative language and writing poetry, playing thoughtfully with words is missing in my students' lives. This is a HUGE gap.

My students are burgeoning artists - dancers, designers, singers, instrumentalists - at a magnet school, who are creative thinkers and wonderful people.

They thrive in a classroom that integrates the arts and offers opportunities for engagement with big ideas. My job is to teach them English - reading and writing - while also supporting their artistic proclivities. I strive to make grammar, reading, and essays connect to real life and keep them engaged.

My Project

I'm requesting a catalog of poetry books. Why? So my students can learn how to use words creatively, think figuratively, and enjoy the fun and beauty of poetry. Our library has a woefully small collection and it's not particularly accessible. I've put together a list of accessible classic poets and collections that will appeal to my high school students, including Billy Collins, Seamus Heaney, Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, Maya Angelou and collections on love, dance and more. My students will be able to browse the poetry library, find poems to connect to and then use these poems to reflect on themselves, write their own poems and practice analysis.

All of this reading will help my kids be more thoughtful artists, people and in a few years - college students!

Reading difficult texts and writing poetry require myriad skills that my students can use in college, in addition to the benefit of enjoying beautiful poetry. Create a text-rich, poetic classroom for my amazing artists! Thanks for thinking of us.
