Poetry for Author's Tea

My students need ink cartridges to print their poems for Author's Tea.

My Students

"Can I print my story?" "No, we are out of ink." "When can we have more ink?" "Next year."

My students are second graders who this year, for the first time, have learned to type documents in Word.

Many don't have computers at home and school is their only access to technology. You can imagine the excitement when they learned how to type a story they had written. They chose pictures or clip arts to illustrate it, chose their font to personalize it and learned how to choose a pretty page border. They could not wait to print it and were so happy with their creations.

My Project

My students used their new skills in the first part of the school year when we held our first Author's Tea. They wrote fairy tales and typed them on the computer. They printed them to share with other students, staff and parents during Author's Tea. It was a huge success and could not wait for the second one in the spring. Well, we are preparing for our second Author's Tea and my students are writing poetry that they will share with family and friends. Unfortunately this time we are out of ink for our printer. Due to budget cuts across the district we are allowed one ink cartridge for the school year.

This project is important to my students and myself.

Through writing and typing they have felt like real authors who publish their creations. Help us make our second Author's Tea a success!
