Podcasting and Sound Art

My students need one Flip mino video camera.We plan to create podcasts about our students and our surrounding community. They will also be used to collect sounds that can be used to make sonic postcards and sound art.

I teach elementary art, music and drama. Our school emphasizes experiential and self directed learning. We strive to educate the whole child which includes; Intellectual, Personal, and Social learning. The students become well balanced, productive and healthy members of society.

I have done this project for a few years now. In the past I used my own personal ipod to record the interviews and collect sounds. Last year at the end of the semester someone stole my ipod from my desk. I don't have enough money to replace the ipod. A flip camera is less expensive than replacing the ipod and also has the video element which will add to our podcasts.

The students need a video camera that can record audio and is portable enough to carry into an interview. From the recordings they collect they produce a podcast.

The podcasts will improve the students communication and technology skills. The students will plan the topic of the podcast, interview certain people about the given topic and then edit the interviews into a podcast. The podcast is on the school website. This project is available several times a year to groups of students 4-6th grade.
