Please Won't You Be? Oh Please Won't You Be Our Biome Buddy?

My students need 24 book titles on biomes and ecology to be able to build their knowledge about the environment than share the book and knowledge with our 1st grade buddies!

My Students

Is there anything better than having the opportunity to pass our knowledge along to someone else? My students will be learning about different biomes of the US, and will then be teaching their first grade buddy about what they have learned.

My students are eager to learn and eager to share what they learn.

Despite lacking resources, they do not lack a spirit or community that will help them thrive in their education. My students are passionate about helping out their younger siblings, or younger school mates. Their enthusiasm is contagious and spreads throughout the school. I imagine even our principal will get an ear full of biome information once this project is funded.

My Project

This project will target my students' background knowledge on biomes by having them read books that are directly and indirectly about them. This project will be able to build science content for my kids, but allow them to build confidence in themselves as readers. When they are reading for multiple purposes, such as, learning new information, or sharing with another student, they are highly motivated to read. These books are at a slightly lower level than 5th grade but provide the content in an engaging way. When a student is successful, and gets to show and tell what they know, they want to read more. It also seems that when students share knowledge across grade levels like this, then the amount of bullying decreases. You are less likely to pick on another student, you have spent learning with.

By funding this project you are impacting many students lives in multiple ways.

You are providing knowledge to students who thirst for it, but lack resources to quench it. You are providing an opportunity for students to read to each other and start to breed a culture of success in reading. You are able to strengthen a community that would probably not be able to come together in such a way.
