My students come to school eager to learn and explore the world around them. Despite being in a high poverty school, my 5th grade students do NOT lack passion and wonder around them. They do lack the real life experiences and resources to make book and science connections to their lives. The best learning comes from hands-on experience, like looking at fossils, holding them in their hands and creating a fossil model like a real paleontologist, make a huge impact on my students. It is through these experiences my students realize what is possible in the world outside of their neighborhood. It helps them expand their world and understanding. One experience like this can springboard a lifetime of learning. It creates an attitude that is contagious and soon students pick up more books to do more research. The power of books and science combine to make even the most reluctant reader a vivacious reader.
