"I read this book all by myself!" Students who struggle to read have given up on reading because of the frustration they experience when they do not have books at their independent reading level. Students with special needs will read if they have the proper books. Please help me purchase books!
The feeling of accomplishment is meant for all students, including students with learning differences.
I teach in an inclusion classroom in an elementary school with a high poverty level (70%). Some of our students served in this general education classroom demonstrate learning differences in academic and social skills. Several students read two or more years below grade level. My co-teacher and I strive to ensure that all of our students are provided with the tools they require to participate and be successful in the general education curriculum. Our students that struggle in academics can thrive with the usage of supplemental materials to address their needs in reading comprehension and fluency. It is difficult for our struggling readers to improve reading skills without reading! For them to read more, they need books at their independent reading level. Help us to obtain books for all readers and for all reading levels.
With the books I have selected, all students will have access to books at varying reading levels. Students with learning differences will be able to independently read a book to a peer, sibling, or teacher and beam with pride for their ability to achieve independence in reading. These books were selected for their popularity, notoriety, and student interest. The students will have the opportunity to take the books home in backpacks for reading to their siblings or parents encouraging family involvement. We require students to read 15 minutes each night and many of our families do not have a supply of books in the home. The usage of the books will provide opportunities to promote language arts skills with book report assignments as part of the reading assignment.
The impact this project will have on my students is as important as their ability to achieve independence in their academic endeavors.
The availability of books at various reading levels will promote a love of reading which will increase a child's broad reading skills. With higher reading skills, language arts skills will improve. You write as well as you can read. The feeling of accomplishment promotes higher self esteem. This elevated self esteem encourages young learners to prosper.
