Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are a wonderful group of 8th graders who are from a unique pocket of our wonderful and diverse city. This is the inaugural year for our middle school, as part of a new districtwide project.

As part of growing up, our students are navigating academics as well as interpersonal relationships during the school day, and that brings some additional stress.

Students are working hard to prepare for state testing and to move on to high school next year. I know this group of kiddos will go very far in life!

My Project

Many students need hands-on, colorful manipulatives to help them understand concepts they may have missed out on during prior school years. These items will quite literally put the math lessons in the students' hands. They are ideal for students who are English Language Learners and also those who have been identified as requiring additional accommodations in the classroom.

For some, once the items are tangible, the numbers on the paper become real and make more sense.

These base ten blocks, fraction tiles and ten-frames will help all of the students in our classroom be able to go deeper in their level of understanding the basic concepts of mathematics.
