My Students

Who are my students? What makes them special? What makes them tick?

My students are an amazing group of teenagers who attend a school for students with severe emotional impairments.

Listening to their stories, where they have been and what they have encountered in their short lives would make most people cry. As educators we strive to fill the gaps in our students' learning from time missed from school due to their disabilities. More than that, we also provide the foundation to see past their past and look towards a future with hope. Our mission is to engage, empower, and inspire each and every one of our students.

My Project

Having chess boards, s'math, and operations and algebraic thinking games will allow my students the opportunity to gain knowledge without realizing they are learning. Many of my students have struggled with math for so long that just telling them we are going to learn something new makes them shut down. At the same time if I tell these students they are going to play a game, they get very excited and are ready to participate. These games all allow them to practice all of the skills that they will need to succeed in their future math classes and help them to build their confidence in math.
