My Students

We are a highly impacted public junior high school in Utah. Our students come from all over the globe. Students at my school come from over 45 countries and speak over 30 languages. They love learning and enjoy school. Despite the challenges they face, they work hard and always try their best.

My scholars have the potential to change the world.

However, to do this, they need the tools and resources to help them achieve their own possibilities. Every day, they meet adversity and obstacles head-on and say, "We will not let you defeat us. We are AVID!" AVID, the program I teach, is a national program where students learn organization, note-taking, collaboration, and problem-solving to support them in their core classes and prepare them for success in high school, college, career, and beyond.

My Project

My students have less access to books than many other youths. Adding these books to my classroom library will give them so many additional opportunities to engage in exploration and learning through books. My library would have varied literature genres to connect with more students, books that celebrate diversity, and texts they may not often be exposed to otherwise.

Books and games are the pathways to learning.

Books are easier to link to learning, whether it's textbooks, fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, or so many other choices. Games, however, are also crucial to student learning and success. They work cooperatively with their peers, practice communication and strategy skills, and they will build on note-taking skills by writing and revising notes on how to play the games prior to actually using them.

These games and books will help advance student learning and literacy skills, as well as support social-emotional health through game playing with their peers.
