Play is Alive and Well in Kindergarten!

Help me give my students a chance at true dramatic play and imagination! The play market and grocery items will help transform our classroom into a life-like store and stage for shopping.

My Students

My students are very diverse. We are an ICT classroom which means Integrated Co-Teaching. 40 percent of our students have special education needs ranging from learning and speech delays to autism spectrum disorder. In addition we service a homeless shelter in our community and service many children in emotional crisis. We are an inner city school in New York City and have students of all ethnic backgrounds. We have many students enroll as they are moving from countries all over the world and frequently know limited to no English and we immerse them in our ELL programs and enriching classroom environments. We even educate many diplomats' families serving at the United Nations.

My Project

Play is the most essential skill for kindergarten! Especially with the rising demands on standards and curriculum, it is easy to understand why dramatic play has lost some of its priority in some primary classrooms. But I don't want to let that happen at our school.

However, I believe strongly that play is an essential skill that this age-group needs daily practice and repetition with in order to thrive and learn to be creative and productive members of the world.The play market and food items will be a daily stage for kindergarten imaginations to run wild with new story-lines and actors to create new skits.
