This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach an amazing group of young children. Their energy is contagious. Their genuine excitement to learn is encouraging.
Our class is a tight-knit community of wonderfully diverse little learners.
My students are 4 and 5-years-old. They represent a range of learning strengths and educational backgrounds. For most of my students, this is their first school experience. Some received early intervention for difficulties with speech; some have IEPs now to support their learning. Our class is wonderfully diverse. We are African American, Latino, and/or Caribbean-American. We are bilingual, and some of us are trilingual. For some, English is not our first language. All students in our school receive free lunch.
In a matter of days and with very little preparation, our school closed and will remain closed for the rest of the school year. My students and families have been trying their absolute best to continue learning at home, but young children need a wide variety of stimulating, hands-on activities to learn new ideas and concepts. This is where you come in!
My Project
One of the defining characteristics of all early childhood classrooms is a wide range of materials for children to manipulate in order to learn new ideas and concepts. Young children need hands-on experiences to learn. The COVID-19 pandemic has robbed my little learners of the materials they need to keep learning.
My little learners will use the hands-on materials in their learning kits for a variety of activities including homework assignments with their families and whole-group activities during our regular class Zoom meetings.
These learning kits will allow my students to name letters and practice letter-sound correspondence using the Wikki Sticks and letter cards. They will be able respond to read aloud comprehension questions in their draw and write journals. They will be able to practice math concepts with their magnetic numbers. And my students will be able to use their white boards and markers to respond in writing during our Zoom class meetings.
