Planting the Seeds for Tomorrow's Food

Help me give my students the gardening tools they need to learn where food comes from.

My Students

I am a Lead Teacher working at a Reggio-Based Head Start Program. My children live in a beautiful diverse-inner city and their families are low income. Many of my children are dual language learners and some are on IEPs.

I am committed to making a difference in their school lives.

My students learned about math and science when they ate vegetables off the plants they planted.

My Project

My students enjoy harvesting vegetables in the fall in our garden that they planted. But, we need more gardening tools.

These tools will give my students their own space and actively encourage them to take responsibility for the plants at the same time.

These tools will teach my students patience and also improve their focus through garden care. Whether we are planting or digging for worms, the children will enjoy wearing the gloves, digging with the hoe or raking up leaves. We can extend gardening play in the classroom while they pretend to harvest the soft vegetables. They are learning botany and math skills while interacting with plants.
