Imagine redefining educational outcomes to include civic and community engagement, and empower the largest and most diverse generation in history to better understand and tackle environmental challenges facing the world today. School gardens and the lessons they teach can improve the lives of children from all backgrounds in many ways. Many children lead sedentary lifestyles and have a limited understanding of the links between exercise, nutrition and lifelong health. Gardening is filled with movement, from standing, walking, kneeling and stretching. As long as there are plants to tend, kids are often so involved in tasks that gardening’s physical and therapeutic benefits are nowhere in mind. School gardening can also affect eating habits, too. Research shows that children are significantly more likely to eat vegetables they have grown. They become more likely to eat vegetables as snacks and might even ask family members to buy vegetables for them. These healthy habits continue into adulthood. Building a flourishing garden moves us closer to these goals. All the gardening supplies I am requesting in this grant will support a flourishing garden.

As students from a low income area, it is important to teach them for a lifetime. They are eager to begin gardening. Many of them have never had a garden at home, or grown anything themselves. Students from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades will be a part of the garden club, however, the garden is accessible to all students in our school, from Pre-K to 6th grade. The garden is a learning area for all students.
