Enthusiastic, energetic, empathetic, creative, inclusive and motivated are a few words that come to mind when thinking about the young learners in my class. Our class is comprised of eighteen, amazing, transitional kindergartners. Within the class, there are gifted and talented students, students with disabilities and English language learners. Despite this, the school has received academic achievement awards the past six years, is a California Distinguished School and a School For Advanced Studies.
"The innocence of children is what makes them stand out as a shining example to the rest of mankind." -Kurt Chambers
These accomplishments are due to the strong partnership between school and home, and we would love to throw the community into the mix, too. This is a school where high academic standards are maintained for all students in a safe and nurturing environment. The faculty and staff are lifelong learners themselves and foster that love of learning in their students. The faculty and staff work hard to ensure that the record of achievement continues.
My Project
Albert Einstein said, "I never teach my pupils, I only provide them with the conditions in which they can learn." This is exactly what I want to provide my students, a place where they can learn outdoors. Not every student excels at being indoors while reading, studying math facts, writing in their journal or participating in a class discussion.
Outdoor learning areas provide a pathway for learners to excel.
The succulents, potting soil, and planters will be used to teach the students about what plants need in order to grow. They will also bring some greenery to what is otherwise a drab, asphalt playground. These plants will provide them with a hands-on way to learn about the natural world while planting, growing and caring for the succulents.
Art supplies are in short supply and need to be replaced often. As teachers, we find ourselves looking in the closet and pushing aside old and outdated supplies - not wanting to throw them out, but not wanting to crack open bottles and pull trays apart and pass them out, either. I would like to change that for my students and make them feel like professionals with the items they need to create new masterpieces.
After planting our succulents we will create a masterpiece that incorporates the succulents we just planted. I know they will truly create memorable masterpieces that they will take great pride in and that their parents will treasure.
