My students need mentor texts to help them see how reading skills are applied to longer texts. I use these picture books in whole group lessons to model the skills and strategies we'll practice.
My students love to read and be read to! They are eager to learn new things and gain experiences through text.
As 5th graders, they can sometimes think they are too cool, but seeing them excited to read independently, with a partner, or read to is awesome!
Our school, teachers, and parents have very high standards for our students, and the kids do a great job under the heavy pressure the state puts on them. I try to make reading a fun and a life-long pleasure.
My Project
Using picture books gets students excited about reading. They love story time as a group and we use this as a way to jump-start the reading class. A picture book can be a fun and different way to engage learners and help them see how specific skills can be used.
When I start off a lesson reading a book like Enemy Pie, it can help them understand story elements while still teaching a great lesson or moral.
With a book like Memoirs of a Goldfish, I can clearly explain the difference in 1st and 3rd person point of view, which can be a difficult standard for students.
