Using picture books gets students excited about reading. They love story time as a group and we use this as a way to jump-start the reading class. A picture book can be a fun and different way to engage learners and help them see how specific skills can be used. When I start off a lesson reading a book like Enemy Pie, it can help them understand story elements while still teaching a great lesson or moral. With a book like Memoirs of a Goldfish, I can clearly explain the difference in 1st and 3rd person point of view, which can be a difficult standard for students.
