Picture Books Are for Everyone

Help me give my students the chance to read and be read a broad range of stories.

This project expired on May 11, 2022.

My Students

The students in my classroom have a wide range of learning disabilities and challenges. These can range from struggles with memory and processing, to intellectual disabilities, to autism spectrum disorder, to specific learning disabilities.

My class supports students who struggle with grasping the academics due to learning or emotional challenges.

Typically, this means the world comes a little too fast at them, or sideways, and they just need the information slowed down, letting them see the material again, and giving them time to understand. How can we meet these challenges when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed?

My Project

Picture books are often looked at as only good for younger kids, but that is not true. Many complex topics are easier for students to understand when presented in picture books. Picture books often foster a deeper and broader range of thinking.

Middle school students benefit from picture books being read to them in a range of ways.

These books can teach writing skills, comprehension strategies, meet ELA objectives, and share morals and life lessons. Many researchers have found that picture books can and should be used frequently in the middle school classroom.
