Piano Playing Please!

My students need a portable keyboard to learn piano basics in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade music classes.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Their desire to play the piano is present, but the pianos are not. Our middle school is a high-need public school in Pennsylvania. I am a music teacher, and my students are 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The group of students I teach change about every six weeks, and through the course of one school year I probably teach about 90% of our student population.

On the first day of music class I always ask my students to think about what they would want to learn if I could teach them anything about music. Most of my students write down that they would like to play the piano, and I love their desire to want to experience music in a hands-on way! Unfortunately, we don't have the resources for pianos for our students. I have one electric keyboard in my room, and I have brought in my personal keyboard so the kids can have another piano to play on. My students show the drive and passion to play music, but our school doesn't have the materials to support their musical interest.

My students need at least one more electric piano to have the opportunity to play in class; if I had more pianos every student in my class would be able to receive instruction on the piano. I firmly believe that music is a subject that students have to experience first hand to really connect with the material. My students are asking to play and create their own music with the help of keyboards and more than anything I want to help them learn to express themselves through music.

Your contributions to this project could change the lives of my students. Most of my students can't afford instruments or lessons, in my class they could have the opportunity to learn to play music as well as make their own. Think back to your own middle-school music experience, was there an instrument you wish you could have played? When my kids are asked, they reply with their interest in learning to play piano. Please help my students to have this opportunity, this exposure to playing and creating music could help to create our next generation of music teachers, composers and musicians. My students are inspired and determined to learn music through playing the piano, your support could truly make their wishes come true!
