Piano for a Music Class

My students need a piano for the classroom in order to learn the fundamental concepts of pitch, melody, and harmony. This will enable them to learn to sing new songs and prepare them for middle school.

This project expired on March 23, 2018.

My Students

Teaching music to students at an early age can be the key to helping them discover their talents and passions. When students learn music, they are learning literacy, culture, communication, and problem-solving skills that transfer to many other academic areas. When students learn music, they are exposed to one of the many wonderful ways they can express themselves.

The schools where I teach serve kindergarten through 5th grade; both schools are Title I schools and every student receives free lunch and breakfast.

A large portion of my students come from non-English-speaking households and single-parent households. Most of these students may never get the chance to participate in private music lessons. Currently, I do not have adequate resources to teach music effectively in my classroom according to the NC Standard Course of Study.

My Project

Without a keyboard, my students are extremely limited in what concepts they can learn effectively in class. Having a piano will allow me to teach my students to basic musical ideas of pitch, melody, and harmony. Without a keyboard, it can be extremely difficult to teach the standards related to these ideas. As such, a keyboard is essential for any functioning music class.

Having a keyboard in the class will better prepare my students for success in their middle and high school music classes and prepare them to learn musical instruments on their own.

Before students can begin learning how to write or perform advanced music in later grade levels, they must learn the basics of how to hear and sing a scale, how chords are built, and how different notes are used to produce specific moods and sounds in music.
