Without a keyboard, my students are extremely limited in what concepts they can learn effectively in class. Having a piano will allow me to teach my students to basic musical ideas of pitch, melody, and harmony. Without a keyboard, it can be extremely difficult to teach the standards related to these ideas. As such, a keyboard is essential for any functioning music class. Having a keyboard in the class will better prepare my students for success in their middle and high school music classes and prepare them to learn musical instruments on their own. Before students can begin learning how to write or perform advanced music in later grade levels, they must learn the basics of how to hear and sing a scale, how chords are built, and how different notes are used to produce specific moods and sounds in music.
