I am a first year art teacher in a low income community with some of the most creative, intelligent, motivated, and focused students. Coming into my first year, I was warned that these students had seen 3 art teachers the previous year. They wondered how long I would stay and if I would finish out the year or quit too. As the school days unfold, I become more and more determined to give my students an enriching, full, empowering art experience.

My 7th and 8th graders lack a lot of the fundamental art skills due to a less than adequate art experience. I see them now, a group of smart, capable kids, lacking the confidence to complete art projects. The solution to a project that they find too difficult is to give up or put in the minimum effort. They are at a pivotal age and it is so important that they find a way to express themselves through art and feel confident in their abilities. They each have a story to tell and thoughts and opinions that deserve a platform. My students have expressed a desire to visit an art museum, create and complete a community mural, and start an after-school art club. I have heard them in Social Studies fired up in political and social debates. I have seen them campaign to their classmates in order to win a spot in the student council. They have a lot to say. Their desire to learn is present and I feel responsible to give them a creative outlet for their passion. A chance to use a camera and create a story journal about their lives is a small step.

I designed a lesson plan that involves cameras and sketchbooks. We will discuss which elements and principles of design go into creating a successful photograph. Then the students will take a disposable camera home with them to photograph various things such as; an object that is important to them, a self portrait, an important person in their life, somewhere that makes them happy, somewhere that shows the history of their neighborhood, etc. They will use the elements and principles of design when photographing. After the photos are developed the students will design a photo journal with writing.

I am so grateful for sites like this one because they give people a chance to be apart of a child's education. Your donation will give my 7th and 8th grade students the chance to create an empowering, enriching piece of art. This project will give them a chance to utilize their creativity and problem solving skills as well as their creative writing skills.
