Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a third grade teacher in an inner city community. The school I serve is unique as the playground, hallways, and classrooms are filled with a diverse group of English Language Learners from around the world. For many of my students, this is the first time they have ever been to school as many of them resided in refugee camps from third world countries. Many students have seen and experienced, famine, violence, and war that includes ethnic cleansing. I feel proud to serve my school as this is my third year on campus as a general education teacher, through my experiences with our student population I feel to serve my school as this is my third year on campus as a general education teacher, through my experiences with our student population I feel as though I have grown not only as an educator, but as an American citizen.

As our country is in the middle of a recession, the amount of funding public schools receive is slim to none. My current group of third graders both native English speakers and Second Language Learners, are lacking phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is essential to the success of ones language development.

I found a number of valuable phonemic awareness resources that Lakeshore Learning provides. Some of the items include: digraph puzzles, change a sound books, roll and read phonics games, and 20 white boards that will continue assist my students during small group phonemic awareness instruction.

Your support will ensure that my students have a phonemic awareness foundation that will enable their success in our world.
