Do you remember when you experienced those "ah hah" moments in the classroom; a time of sudden realization, inspiration, recognition, or comprehension? They are rewarding, defining moments! As a special education teacher, my heart leaps for joy when my students experience those tender moments of learning. However, I have witnessed that as students progress through their educational career, if a child has not been given the foundational skills in reading and math at an early age, it becomes more difficult to find those successful learning moments later on because they have experienced frustration and discouragement in understanding basic concepts. I am a true believer that the earlier the intervention, the greater the opportunity for success.
My students work through various physical, social, and learning disabilities.
Despite these identified challenges, when those "ah-hah" moments occur, their faces light up and they feel empowered and motivated to continue learning and moving forward. I incorporate multiple methods of learning, involving manipulatives and groupings. My students are my motivation to improve and grow in my instructional skill set. I believe in my kiddos! I know they can reach beyond set limitations if they are given the correct tools!
My Project
The materials and supplies I am requesting are necessary for the process of learning with students who have disabilities. Students with identified learning disabilities are perfectly capable of learning core, foundational skills for reading and math. However, they require additional practice and hands-on materials to grasp and fully understand concepts.
Concepts are best introduced and practiced with “hands-on”, concrete materials.
For example, knowing one-digit facts is important, but working with paper and pencil it is difficult for students with learning disabilities to master. Using snapping cubes, touching and moving materials will provide understanding of basic math facts. Flipping phonics books and writing letters with white boards will provide concrete opportunities for learning in the foundations of reading. I truly need your support to provide this hands on environment for learning.
