This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are young performers from the Coachella Valley in California. We have a 6th-8th grade band and color guard program comprised of close to 200 students.

Our students enthusiastically come to class each day, and often describe the band and color guard as one of the most safe and welcoming groups that they are a part of.

Something that makes our program very special is that teamwork, and leadership opportunities happen very regularly due to the structure of our program. Our students are highly motivated to help each other out with their music, instruments, and choreography. Each students wants to see every individual succeed which in turn helps the whole program succeed. Every day they motivate me to continue to be a better person and teacher.

My Project

As our music program is developing, we are always looking for ways to improve the quality of music education that our students are receiving. One of these methods is dedicating one beginner class to have all percussion students instead of mixing beginner percussionists with beginner wind instrument players.

Through this method, our beginner percussionist are receiving a curriculum that is specifically geared towards their instrument.

In order to make this class work more effectively, we hope to acquire a class set of drum pads. We already have a class set of drum sticks, and these drum pads will complete our immediate needs to make this class work.
