Pencil Powerhouse: Science Success Through Writing

Help me give my students pencils, pens, and dry erase marker refills to support their learning.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students need basic supplies such as pencils and dry erase markers in order to have a productive class. My goal is to have my students spend as much time deeply thinking as possible. Research shows that students spend more time thinking and discussing when they use vertical whiteboards instead of sitting in their seats. I want to bring those resources to my students.

I want to get my students up, moving, collaborating, and thinking deeply.

Using whiteboards helps my students talk to each other, express their ideas, and develop a better understanding of science. In order to accomplish this students need whiteboard markers! Since I have started using vertical whiteboards, students see physics problems as fun puzzles to solve, not drudgery. They are excited to work together and take on the challenge of difficult work.

Students also need to be able to synthesize their ideas once they've done this deep thinking. We do this through "Notes to our Future Forgetful Selves" but they need pencils and pens in order to be able to do that!
