This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach first graders, who predominantly come from families that live on or below the poverty line. When one works with students coming from families where the student might be the first to ever attend school, one frequently encounters issues with writing, letter formation, and recognition. Also in first grade, students begin to put together all of those fine motor movements of flicking, pinching, and grasping, to hold and manipulate a pencil or pen.

For little fingers, which are still growing and changing, they need a little help from a pencil grip.

The first time you hold a pencil, and manipulate it to write is not an easy task. However, pencil grips make it much more manageable and comfortable. After teaching first grade for nine years, I have also discovered that a first grader with poor pencil grip can end up seriously damaging their rotator cuff!

Pencil grips have become a necessity for me in my classroom over the past two years. However, they are not the most cost effective school supply. For the past two years I have scraped pennies together, and purchased enough for each of my students in my classroom plus a few extra. It has occurred to me that I might not have to do that, if I let you know of this practical need.

My first graders will become better writers, enjoy writing more, and prevent themselves from physical pain by having a pencil grip. Please consider donating to this project, and helping my first graders to blossom in letter and number formation.
