Passage to Manhood

Help me give my students the opportunity to be more than their circumstances. As these young men begin their steps into manhood, assistance is needed for this rite of passage journey.

My Students

As a teacher in a comprehensive high school, resources are quite limited. Most students come from low-income households and have parents who do not speak English. I also teach in a school district that continuously has its funding cut for various reasons. My students are faced with several challenges both in and outside of the classroom.

Despite the many challenges they face, my students are eager to learn more about themselves and the many cultures that walk the halls of our school.

The diversity of my school spans several continents, cultures, and classes. My students seek opportunities to share and experience each other in ways that are not permitted during instructional time.

These are students that have a different language, clothes, food, music, etc and wish to express them to others, especially the students they spend several hours a day with. And being in an environment where all are excepted brings about a better learning climate for all.

My Project

During these times of a global pandemic, many of my students are struggling with emotional issues in addition to financial hardships. The most requested items from the young men at my school were deodorant, razors, and shaving cream. As they transition into manhood, also comes the emotion of dating and socializing. The young men expressed concerns about their presentations to others in their circles and how they are received. The items requested will enable the young men to face the school day with more confidence to experience better academic, emotional, and social outcomes.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
