This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
It's just about impossible to stand in line at the grocery store and not flip through a copy of your favorite magazine, right? Those glossy, colorful pages are hard to resist.
My special education students span across 5 different grade levels, and their reading levels present an even wider range.
As you can imagine, finding texts to fit each child's independent and instructional reading levels can be quite a challenge - particularly when you consider that struggling readers are often much less willing to want to read in the first place.
My Project
The magazine subscriptions we have requested will address that issue on a number of levels! First, my students will jump at the chance to read magazines, rather than "a regular old book." Second, these magazines are written at a variety of different reading levels, so I will be able to match students up with the subscription that is "just right" for their reading level. Finally, Scholastic's high-quality classroom magazines provide ample opportunity for students to learn new information and practice their reading comprehension skills.
Please help my hard-working special education students get the tools that they need for reading success!
Like many adults, a number of them would much rather read through a magazine than an entire book. Please help us make that a possibility in our classroom!
