Parent Training: Covid-19 School Closures for Special Needs/Low-income Households
Help me give my students an opportunity to make distance learning a success. Without parent training, many of the students in high needs communities will not succeed. I am including basic supplements for training.
As a teacher of students with disabilities, I always teach my students that disability is not inability. The students I work with are primarily students with disabilities that require them to receive special instruction from an Education Specialist like myself. With the impact of school closures, many of our students who are in the low-income bracket are adversely affected due to their lack of resources at home. The school closure has affected us greatly and caused a strain that is unsurmountable for some. This project will also touch the lives of parents of students with disabilities by providing training in how to navigate their child's education at home. This project will help nurture parent's self-confidence in order to boost student achievement.
My Project
Parents in low income communities will need support in order to facilitate distance learning. I will be purchasing a curriculum to teach our most high needs parents how they can facilitate their special needs children's learning during this difficult time. I am going to use the bluetooth headphones to coach the parents through levels of prompting while the student works on their homeschool assignments. I need to see some of their interactions in order to coach them through and that is why I included the wyze cameras which can be set up more discreetly and allow for a more natural interaction which in turn will be likely to continue after the coaching session is finished.
I have included white boards, markers, and number lines which will supplement the students learning materials that they will be receiving at the District level.
For our special needs students, they will not always be able to conceptualize paper and pencil or computer-based tasks so this will allow for them to make learning more concrete.
I have also included practical items like a visual timer, a calendar to start scheduling and I will supplement that with visual supports that I can print from my classroom. I want to make the parents' job as easy as possible so that their children will continue to benefit from the months to come of distance learning.
