This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Alright, so what is the atomic mass of sodium. Jose, any ideas?" "Well, I could use a periodic table to figure it out but ours is made from paper and all pixely!"

My students go to a public high school of about 3000 in southern California.

Our school is 99.5% Hispanic and considered high poverty. I teach in the Visual and Performing Arts Academy at our school and so my students are quite creative. Many of them are involved in band, sports, or other extracurricular activities. I have some of the hardest working students alive and some of the hardest to get to work students!

My Project

My students need a giant periodic table for the classroom. Chemistry is the science of what we're made of. In class, we discuss elements every day. Currently, our class uses a 4 page by 4 page printout of the periodic table that was painfully and lovingly stapled and taped together. My students deserve a periodic table that they can actually read in the classroom.

So lets try that opening sentence again.

"Jose, what is the atomic mass of sodium" "Why, Mr. Larkin. I have been so inspired by our brand new giant periodic table that I spent all last night researching sodium at the library. It has an atomic mass of 23g/mol with its most common isotope having 11 protons and 12 neutrons. I'm so grateful that it was provided through DonorsChoose.org"
