This book has opened powerful conversations about identity, belonging, and resilience. Many of my English Learner and newcomer students connected deeply with the story's themes of immigration and family separation — topics that mirror their own journeys or those of their loved ones. Through shared reading, we practiced essential literacy skills such as annotating, summarizing, and citing textual evidence while also building empathy and voice.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom has become an experience of community. Students sit together in small groups, take turns reading aloud, and pause to discuss powerful passages. We use bilingual glossaries, reflection journals, and group discussions to support comprehension and expression. Students who were once hesitant to read in English are now eager to volunteer, share quotes, and make text-to-self connections. Seeing their confidence grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of this project.\r\n\r\nOne student recently said, \"This book feels like my story, it makes me proud of where I come from.\"That moment reminded me that your donation does more than buy books, it builds bridges between students' lived experiences and the world of literature. Thank you for helping my students see themselves in the stories they read and for giving them the gift of literacy, representation, and hope.","fullyFundedDate":1762266411698,"projectUrl":"project/opening-worlds-through-books-land-of-th/9751509/","projectTitle":"Opening Worlds Through Books: Land of the Cranes","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Gutierrez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9648457_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723420278508","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/x-gutierrez"},{"teacherId":9648457,"projectId":9751521,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous donations, our space has been completely transformed into a welcoming, calming, and organized environment that promotes both learning and emotional well-being. The new bookshelf units have given us a functional and beautiful way to organize our books and resources, and the entryway benches not only offer practical seating but also help create a peaceful, orderly flow in the room. Students now walk into the space and immediately notice the difference—it feels intentional, comfortable, and like a place where they belong.\r\n\r\nWhen the items first arrived, students were excited to help unpack and assemble everything. One student even said, \"It looks like a real library now!\"—which brought the biggest smile to my face. The faux plants and decor give the room a warm, lived-in feel that helps students relax and open up, especially during one-on-one sessions or small group meetings.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, the updated environment continues to support the important work we're doing around emotional regulation, goal setting, and social-emotional learning. With the Teachers Pay Teachers gift card, I found creative materials such as lessons incorporating PIXAR short clips that help students connect big ideas about emotions, resilience, and teamwork to real-life situations. For example, students used these clips to spark discussions on how to manage emotions, express themselves in healthy ways, and adopt a growth mindset when faced with challenges.\r\n\r\nThe materials have also opened up opportunities for students to explore how social-emotional skills connect to future careers. Through activities and projects, they've reflected on their strengths, practiced problem-solving, and envisioned the kinds of STEAM careers they can one day pursue.
