Help me give my students origami paper to make paper cranes for peace.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are curious and energetic and they are always excited to do something with their hands! They are thoughtful and insightful students who are curious about cultures from around the world. They are always comparing, contrasting, as well as connecting other cultures with their own. My students also have a competitive spirit that helps them push each other to succeed.
Currently, our school is in a hybrid model of instruction, which is very challenging for students who engage well with hands-on activities.
Our school is located in the city of Wilmington Delaware and the families we serve have been severely affected by the pandemic, so purchasing art materials is not a priority.
In reality, my students have been affected in many more ways than just financially. This year has been a very difficult year for adults and an even harder year for my students. From being isolated to navigating a virtual life at early ages, to experiencing the emotional and or financial strain on their families. Through all of this, however, I have witnessed my students show tremendous resiliency and hope for the future. I'd like for you to see how amazing my students are.
We will use this origami paper to challenge ourselves to make 1,000 paper cranes for the Peace Crane Project which is a paper crane exchange program.
This origami paper will not only provide my students an opportunity to practice the art of paper folding, but will also provide opportunities for my students to slow their minds down, reflect, and connect with themselves so that they are able to better connect with others.
This project isn't just about learning about origami, it's also about encouraging peace and hope and sharing it.
