Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a school social worker at a high school in an urban school district. My students come from diverse backgrounds. In addition to school, many students have jobs and other responsibilities at home which adds to their stress levels. My students struggle to manage social, academic, and home demands throughout their day. 67% of students receive free or reduced lunch.
My students face many barriers to achieving academic success.
Many have experienced trauma and have difficulty coming to school regularly. When they do come to school, many struggle to achieve academic success in the classroom. They lack the coping skills needed to manage stress and find academic success.
My Project
In order to engage my students in school and encourage school pride I will provide historically disengaged students with school store credit. Disengaged students are students with 5 more absences, frequent tardiness, and academic failure. With this credit students will be able to purchase panther pride hooded sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats, and other school apparel. Providing access to these clothing items will help engage students in school and offer disengaged students an opportunity to show pride in their school.
Research shows that school engagement will improve when students feel connected to their school.
Students who are absent, tardy, or struggling academically are disengaged. I hope to use these items as a way to engage students to attend school, come to school on time, and achieve academic success. These school clothes will allow disengaged students an opportunity to shop and purchase school apparel. When wearing these items, students will show pride in their school and feel more connected to school. Hopefully this sense of pride and feeling of connection will decrease absences, decrease tardiness, and increase academic success. These items will help disengaged students in feeling connected to their school.
