My students need sets of non-fiction animal books to take home and read with their families. Groups of students will take home the same book and discuss it with their friends when they bring it back.
My students come to first grade eager to learn about the world around them. They love to sit down with a friend to read, and they love to talk! Our school is an urban elementary school in St. Paul with many bilingual students who are learning English. Some of our students have recently arrived in the United States and did not have an opportunity to attend school before.
Every day I see first graders working together, playing together, and engaged in learning about math, reading, writing, and science.
They are a community of learners that cares about each other.
My Project
My first graders love to read and learn about animals. They are asking for sets of books about some of their favorite mountain and grassland habitat animals: snow leopards, pandas, condors, rabbits, and more. They want to learn about each animal's diet, appearance, life cycle, behavior, and habitat.
My first graders love talking about books with their families.
Every day they choose a book to take home and read. We encourage parents and other family members to read with their child to support their growth as readers and thinkers. The families love having the first graders read and talk about books for homework.
My first graders also like to be able to talk with their friends about the books they are reading. They would like several copies of the animal books so several friends can choose the same book, take it home, and bring it back to school to read again and talk about together the next morning. Talking about the books they are reading will students develop comprehension and language skills.
These books will engage first graders and get them excited about learning about our world and about reading at home. Thank you for caring about my students and helping them learn.
