Paint a Rainbow: Love and Healing in the Library

Help me give my students the chance to create bright, beautiful art based on the work of author/illustrator Lois Ehlert. We need canvases, watercolor paints, sealer, and more.

My Students

Students are 85% African American, 11% Caucasian, and 80% are labeled "economically disadvantaged." Our community comprises 18 neighborhoods, 14 of which are food deserts. PHS serves all 18. We are the only comprehensive high school on the North Side of Pittsburgh, which makes us the most critical place besides home for kids on this side of town.

My Project

This has been a challenging school year for teachers and children. During the first week of March, our school will celebrate Literacy Week. For the pure joy of it, we would like to introduce author/illustrator Lois Ehlert to our students, asking them to wonder at her use of vivid color, simple shapes, and a delight in nature.

We are going to present kids with a giant canvas, bright paper, artist-quality paint, and Lois Ehlert's exuberant artistic example, asking them to create visions of hope, nature, and dreams.

Our vision is to organize a virtual art show when the kids are done so that their parents and the community at large can be inspired by our kids' talent. Our school isn't always the place our city thinks of when the word "inspiring" is used. Our learning community knows better, and we would love the opportunity to show the world what we're made of. Thank you for your help!
