Owls Puke So We Can Learn

My students need science supplies to dissect and analyze owl pellets in orders to receive hands on experience learning about food webs.

My Students

My 5th grade classroom at in a Title I school in South Carolina, is a place of fun and learning. In my class, we emphasize cooperative learning, technological fluency and application, and deep-level conceptual engagement. I have a strong belief in teaching methods that encourage critical thought, introspection, and a genuine love of exploration.

My students live in a world of poverty, however they are upbeat, positive, and full of life.

As their teacher, I am perceptive to the struggles of my students living in poverty and want to provide them with the best opportunities available. Because poverty can be defining, I do not label my students by their situations. I do not seek to combat or overcome student experiences and backgrounds but instead, use students’ experiences and personal contexts as productive learning tools.

My Project

My students love to get their hands dirty! With lots of curious boys and girls in my class, we love to do gross experiments and get messy.

Owl pelts are perfect for my inquisitive class to experience the wonders of the food chains and food webs.

In fifth grade we learn about limiting factors and connections within the environment. Experiencing the dissection of an owl pellet will allow my students to explore the relationship between predator and prey.

As we learn about ecosystems we will also talk about the importance of preserving their special balances. We will discuss the impact that humans have on our delicate world and how we can use our resources wisely and take care of our planet.
