I teach at a Title I school, my students come from high poverty homes. Because of their backgrounds, my students can struggle with confidence in an academic setting. But they are all smarter than they believe themselves to be. Each of them is a story teller, full of personality and curiosity, and possessing a great deal of meaningful life experience. I need to provide structure in order to focus the innate creativity of my students--without a sense of direction, they can feel overwhelmed, which suppresses their growth potential as writers. My students need a sense of security and support in their writing environment, where they can be free to take risks, exploring and expanding their own stories so that they may more fully grasp what being a student is all about.
