Help me give my students an area outside where they can develop their gross motor skills with a rope tunnel and bridge, imagination, cooperative play with Tonka Trucks, and scientific inquiry.
I teach in a small rural school district that houses infants up to Kindergarten. My Kindergarten students are energetic, outgoing, and active 5 and 6 year olds. I have 23 students in my classroom which includes 5 inclusion students. My students have varied abilities but all are full of curiosity and energy. They are learning how to work together with others who have differing abilities. They are positive peers for our students with autism and are helping them develop into the best people they can be. The relationships they are building will help them throughout their entire lives.
"Learning is an active process.
We learn by doing...Only knowledge that is used sticks in your mind." - Dale Carnegie. Traditional way of teaching are not always the best ways to reach my little learners so I have to be innovative. I have to teach them in ways that pique their interests and teach them when they don't even realize they are learning.
My Project
I propose we create an area outside where the students can develop their gross motor skills, imagination, cooperative play, and scientific inquiry. We will need an outdoor table where students can examine nature using magnifying glasses. Journals/clipboards and paper will be available to draw and write about their findings. This will be an area to write about their balance scale investigations, draw their rolling ball designs, design their creation for the sand pit, etc.
Items for our sand pit for exploration, design, and construction (kid sized shovels, plastic animals, trucks, toy construction equipment, PVC pipes, sieves, wooden spoons, pots, pans- some can be donated items) and a waterproof storage container for these items.
Tonka Trucks would be a terrific addition to the sand pit. The kindergarten science curriculum teaches about pushes and pulls so these would be great learning tools.
I have built an equal arm balance scale with buckets so objects can be compared by weight.
Balls and ramp that the students can manipulate and create their own cascading ball experiments. (this can be made from either PVC pipes or vinyl gutter materials).
Active area where students can climb, balance, swing, using a Ninja slackline, rope tunnel, and rope bridge.
Resin storage boxes to safely store the materials that double as seating area for 2-3 kids.
