Out with the Chairs … Let’s Sit on Exercise Balls Instead

My students need 8 exercise stability balls to replace the chairs in our small classroom.

Sometimes it’s just so hard to sit at a desk. My students are already a full year behind their peers in math, and they haven't even finished the third grade. I teach elementary math to struggling students in a low-income, high-need, rural community.

My students want so badly to do well, but sometimes they have difficulty sitting for even a few minutes at a time. Math is 90 minutes long. We sing, we dance, we do math outside, we play math games, we go to math stations around the room, and yet my very well-intentioned students sometimes struggle to learn in their seats.

Replacing uncomfortable chairs with exercise stability balls would be a powerful way to increase students’ attention (and let them quietly get out their wiggles). In classrooms that use exercise balls in place of chairs, students are more positive about school, more physically fit, and better focused. Not to mention, students would be incredibly excited to sit on rubber balls instead of chairs. They assure you that it would be the greatest thing ever. To my students, exercise stability balls would be amazingly fun. To me, they’re a simple, effective way to move my students forward mathematically.

My students need significant math intervention, and it is so important that I maximize every available moment with them. Your help will give my students the extra focus and learning time that they so urgently need to catch up in math.
